Description

VedSaras · Wood-Pressed Black Mustard Oil

The Bold Taste of Tradition

Deep amber, sharp and unmistakably pungent — the mustard oil that has defined North and East Indian kitchens for generations. VedSaras Wood Press Black Mustard Oil is slow-pressed from black mustard seed in a traditional wooden ghani, so the oil keeps the bold aroma and fiery “jhaanj” that makes mustard oil irreplaceable in tadkas, pickles and curries.

Why Wood-Pressed?

Wood pressing is a traditional extraction method that uses slow mechanical pressure rather than intensive refining processes. This helps preserve the oil’s natural aroma, rich flavour and original characteristics — making it a preferred choice for generations.

SelectSeeds are cleaned and sorted before pressing.
Slow-pressA wooden pestle turns slowly in the ghani, gently crushing the seeds.
SettleThe freshly pressed oil rests so that natural sediment settles.
Filter & bottleThe oil is filtered and bottled — no intensive refining.

Storage & usage

Getting the Best from Your Black Mustard Oil

How to store

  • Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat — not right next to the stove.
  • Keep the cap tightly closed after every use.
  • Never let water or a wet spoon get into the bottle.
  • Best before 12 months from the date of packaging, as printed on the label. Once opened, use within a few months for the best aroma.

Natural sediment: wood-pressed oil is not heavily refined, so a little natural sediment or slight cloudiness at the bottom of the bottle is normal.

How to use

  • Tadka & curries: heat until it just begins to smoke, turn the heat down for a few seconds, then add your seeds and spices — the traditional way to mellow the sharp raw edge.
  • Achaar: the classic base for mango, lemon and chilli pickles; keep pickles covered with a layer of oil.
  • Raw use: a few drops in chokha, bharta or jhal muri for the authentic kick.
  • Deep frying: fry on steady medium-high heat and avoid reusing the oil again and again.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the same as kachi ghani mustard oil?

Yes — “kachi ghani” refers to oil pressed in a traditional ghani. Ours is pressed in a wooden ghani.

Why does mustard oil smell so strong?

The sharp aroma comes from natural compounds released when mustard seed is crushed. It mellows when the oil is heated to its smoking point before cooking, as is traditional.

Black or yellow mustard oil — which should I choose?

Black mustard oil is darker and more pungent; yellow mustard oil is golden and comparatively milder. Choose by taste and recipe.

How should I store it?

Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct heat and sunlight. Keep the cap tightly closed.

What is the shelf life?

Best before 12 months from the date of packaging (printed on the label).
